Sky and snow, Southern Alps, South Island

After you have been in the South Island for a few days and done some travelling, only then can you start to get a sense of the scale of the Southern Alps… It takes a half a day to get from coast to coast, and a day to get from top to bottom.

Its not just the size, but also the localised weather pattern and the terrain. Mis judge the mood of the mountains, and it might just spoil your day.
